What actually changed

  • Noise cancellation for everyone. AirPods 4 split into a cheaper model without ANC and a pricier one with it. Every AirPods 5 has ANC, and it’s stronger.
  • Tougher build. The rating jumps from IP54 to IP57, so they cope better with sweat and splashes during workouts.
  • Better sound tuning. Apple describes a new multiport acoustic design and updated Adaptive EQ.
  • One trade-off: with ANC on, total battery with the case is around 20–22 hours. The basic AirPods 4 reach up to 30 hours because they have no ANC to power.
